Know more about Khao Lak.

Generally there are three seasons in Khao Lak, Phang Nga. March, April and May are considered a distinct period because of the heat and humidity. The two accompanying seasons govern activities in the Andaman Sea, the northeast monsoon, which runs from November to May brings consistently sunny weather and calm sea, the southwest monsoon, running from May to October brings the most unpredictable and rainy weather. Temperatures vary between 22 and 35 degrees Centigrade and water temperatures from 26 to 29 degrees through the year.

     January
The weather is generally dry and sunny, the sea is fairly calm and the sky is bright blue which results in very good weather for sea canoeing, diving and snorkeling. It gets hotter towards the end of the month, but the northwest monsoon conditions still prevail. Although quieter than December, January can be a very busy month due to summer holidays in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas and New Year. It's a good time to visit Khao Lak.

     February
The sea is generally flat and the wind is not strong, with not much rain. Either late February or early March brings in the Chinese New Year (trut jeen in Thai) and the exact date depends upon the moon. There are many diving boats and divers at Similan, with the under water visibility being good at this time.

     March
The weather generally becomes warmer and more humid, but you can still expect plenty of sunshine. For scuba divers, visibility may slightly diminish, but increased plankton counts improve your chance of seeing whale sharks and manta rays.

     April
The weather conditions generally remain exactly the same as March. April is the month of Thai festivals, with Songkran from the 13th to the 15th. This is the Lunar New Year celebration in Thailand and traditionally revolves around Buddha images being bathed in water and younger Thais showing respect to monks and elders by sprinkling water over their hands. Be prepared to get wet - no matter how you are dressed. The diving is good in April with a good chance of seeing whale sharks and manta rays. The sea is flat and it's the warmest month of the year.

     May
Generally the weather is fine and the sea is calm, but in the middle of May the weather becomes little less predictable. The Similan national park is closed at the end of this month. May

     June
June is the beginning of the rainy season, although the weather can be much the same as in March. The mountains start to get greener, the waterfalls start to have a lot of water and it's a good time to go treking in Khao Lak national park.

     July
Much like June, some days are rainy and some days are sunny. The sea can be rough and the beaches tend to be empty. There are not many tourists here, which makes it good for people who want some peace and quiet. The temperature is about 30 degrees Centigrade, with less chance of getting sunburn.

     August
Heavy sea under currents and rip tides can make swimming difficult on some beaches, red flags on the beach mean don't swim under any circumstances as the waves can be big. This is a good to visit the waterfalls around Khao Lak as there will be a lot of water and they look very beautiful. The beaches are empty and you can have the whole beach to yourself.

     September
This is potentially the wettest month, along with October and there are often gusty winds. Like the rest of the rainy season, however, there are often still peak seasons with extended spells of clear and dry weather. September and October usually have the lowest hotel occupancy rates, so good bargains are to be found if you are prepared to gamble on the weather, the general cost of living can be lower.

     October
The beginning of the month can be the wettest and windiest but the weather generally improves as November approaches, the winds change  direction and the northeast monsoon takes over from the southwest. October is usually the month when the Vegetarian Festival is celebrated in Khao Lak and you will see the yellow flags at the side road when you drive through Khao Lak. Chinese Buddhists eat only vegetarian food and there are various ceremonies and processions. Khao Lak Scuba Adventures first diving trips start on the 15th of this month.

     November
The northwest monsoon means that this time of year is the most perfect. This is the beginning of the peak season, lasting until May and is ideal for all things nautical. Culturally the month see the annual Loi Krathong, or Full Moon Festival, when small baskets or boats made from banana leaves are set afloat filled with flowers, incense, candles and a coin.

     December
The weather should still be dry and sunny, with calm seas, making this a good month for diving. Christmas and New Year make this a very busy time of year for Khao lak.

I gained some weight on the live-aboard.

On the first trip to Similan with Mantaqueen I in October 2009. The boat was full and the diving was great. There was no current, no rain and no big waves. We went to Similan, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu rock. We did not meet many divers because it was just the beginning of the season. There are only a few dive boats that go out at that time of the year, so we had almost all the dive sites to ourselves. I had 4 divers in my group, two of whom were from Russia. They could not speak much English, so we used a lot more hand signals on the boat than in the water, but we had a lot of fun and did some nice diving together. I show them the picture of the fish we saw after every dive.

Another of my jobs besides guiding is to tell people which dishes are spicy and which are not. I like to do that a lot because it's funny to see the faces of people when they like spicy food or  are scared of spicy food as they are not used to it. Most of the food is not spicy anyway, but sometimes we had one dish a little bit spicy to make people excited. The breakfast is European, we had eggs, toast, sausage, jam, bacon and ham. Lunch and dinner were a mixture of Thai and European food, changing all the time for the whole trip. The food tasted so good and I'm always hungry after every dive so I ate a lot on that trip.

After 4days/4nights the trip was over and we all came back to Khao Lak. I went back to my room to change my clothes and found out that some of my trousers were so tight. I suddenly realized that I ate too much on the boat in the last 4 days. But I could not help it as the food on the boat was so good. I felt like I was on a floating restaurant surrounded by great views of the islands, the beach and the sea.Thank you to the chef.

Manta Ray at Koh Bon

Koh Bon is located at the north of the Similan islands. The dive site is on the southwestern point and consists of a 33 metre wall facing the small cove, and a step-down ridge that carries on to depths of over 45 metres. Leopard sharks are common on the ridge and on the sandy flats below the wall. White tip sharks can be seen roaming the depths off the edge of the reef. There are many different types of fish living on the reef. Sometimes you can see the Smalltooth Emperor, Big eyed Trevally/Jack, Trumpet fish and Snapper moving together in a big group to work for a living. The wall itself has plenty of critters to keep you interested including various types of moray eels. The soft corals are not as high-profile as they are in the Similans, there's mostly hard coral like Stag horn and Table coral. Koh Bon is one of the best places in Thailand to see manta rays, especially from April to May.
The manta ray (Manta birostris) is the largest species of the rays. The largest known specimen was more than 7.6 metres across. If you see them, keep a little distance from them and the chances are good that they'll circle and swoop around, feeding on the plankton. Manta rays are harmless to divers, if the manta feels threatened by rapid or aggressive movements it will just glide off into the distance and find somewhere else to feed.
Khao Lak Scuba Adventures organize daytrip and live-aboard to Koh Bon from 15 Oct - 15 May. Join us www.khaolakscubaadventures.com

Boonsung wreck, Khao Lak.

Boonsung wreck is the best local dive site in Khao Lak, only 50 minutes from Khao Lak by longtail boat. This tin miner platform was owned by the Boonsung Tin Mining Company and operated along the Andaman coast throughout the tin mining boom which ended early last decade. The boat sank in 1984 under unknown circumstances and is resting on the seabed in an average depth of 18 - 20 meters. This wreck is 60 metres in length, 12 metres wide and 6 metres high and lies positioned in a north to south direction. After the Tsunami in 2004 the wreck was split into three parts. Penetration is not allowed.
Everytime I dive here I see a great amount of fish. Descending from the surface, you'll soon be surrounded by clouds of  blue-stripe snappers, two spotted fusiliers, juvenile yellowtail barracuda, all of whom use Boonsung wreck as a congregation point. There are dozens of porcupinefish parading around the wreck, with some resting in the small gaps of the wreck. Every few meters you can see lion fish gathering together. You don't want to touch or hold on to this wreck because if you look carefully you will see Scorpion fish all over the place. On the body of the wreck you can find many different types of sea slugs and nudibrunches. Diving along the sides of the wreck, look closely and you'll see white eyes morays, Honeycomb morays and Giant morays. Sometime we have seen Leopard sharks resting on the sandy bottom and every year some divers see Whale sharks once or two times a year. If you dive with an experienced dive guide who dives there often, you might get to see Stone fish there too.
Khao Lak Scuba Adventures organize the trip to Boonsung wreck everyday from 15th November - 15th May.

Ambush Predator

Frog fish, family Antennariidae, are a type of angler fish in the order Lophiiformes. Frog fish have a stocky appearance, atypical of most fish. Ranging from 2.5-38cm (1-15 inches) long, their plump, high-backed, non-streamlined body is scaleless and bare, often covered with bumpy, bifurcated spinules. Their short bodies have between 18 and 23 vertebrae and their mouths are upward pointed with palatal teeth. They are often brightly colored, white, yellow, red, green, or black or spotted in several colors in order to blend in with their coral surroundings. Coloration can also vary within one species, making it difficult to differentiate between them.

The unusual appearance of the Frog fish is designed to conceal it from predators and sometimes to mimic a potential meal to its prey. Frog fish generally do not move very much, preferring to lie on the sea floor and wait for prey to approach. It's hard to spot a Frogfish. But if you find one once, you will be likely to see it again at the same place for months. To see Frogfish at the Similans you need an experienced dive guide with good eyes. To see Frog fish you need to have good eyes yourself too. Often the dive guide may try to show Frog fish to the divers in the group, but the divers can not make it out because it's very well camouflaged.

Did you know, Frog fish can also expand their stomach to swallow animals up to twice their size?

It's more than a PADI diving course.

Most people sign up for a diving course because they want to learn how to dive and dive during their holidays. But actually you learn more than diving and you get more out of it than you expect.
In the PADI Open Water Diver course you learn how to dive and you learn how to follow your underwater guide in a responsible way. You're always diving with a buddy. Before you enter the water you both agree on who will lead the dive and who will follow. If everyone in the group wants to lead and nobody wants to follow none of you will have a buddy. Everybody will have to go on their own, which is not safe. Every company have to have a manager, every government unit have to have a leader, every army have to have a chief. If the leader is playing a good leader and the followers are playing good followers. That unit or that company will run well. But if one of them, the leader or the follower don't play their part then that unit will not be successful.
In the PADI Rescue course you learn that your own safety is the first priority. To help other people you have to save yourself first. No one will benefit from you becoming the second victim when you try to save someone. If you can not swim you will not be able to help a drowning person. You will be the scond victim if you jump in to the water. Even if you can swim you should not just jump in to the water right away. In many situations it's more prudent to extend a stick or throw a floating device to the victim.
PADI diving courses are not only diving courses. There is more good you can learn from them. When will you do the next one?
From beginner to professional, from technical deep diving to technical instructor, all SSI and PADI courses now available at Khao Lak's award winning dive center Khao Lak Scuba Adventures

Baby Whaleshark at Tachai pinnacle, Similan island.

In 2008, I was working on the live-aboard boat to Similan islands. I had an old couple, the lady was 67 years old and her husband, I can not remember his age. They were so sweet. Both of them were AOW divers with good buoyancy.
We were at Similan Islands on the first day, and Koh Bon and Koh Tachai on the second day. We did the first and second dive of the third day at Richelieu rock, and dive number three at Tachai pinnacle. We had mild current, and visibility was about 10 meters. We went to 22 meters to look for leopard shark, they lie on the bottom to rest during day time. We did not see any leopard sharks. But the corals were so nice and there were small fish every where. After 25 minutes, we came up to 15 meters. I turned around to ask my customers for air. And I saw a big fish appear closer and closer behind my customers. I showed the hand signal to tell them to look behind. The lady made a lot of noise and moved her arms up and down. Her husband did not show any sign of happiness but I knew that he was very glad to see the whaleshark. It was about 3 meters long. It looked calm and curious. We did not swim after it. It came very close, only a few meters away. The giant swam away after a few minutes.
We swam to the top of the pinnacle at 12 meters and met one of the other groups. I signaled to them that we saw a whaleshark. The leader of that group showed the hand signal that her group did not see it. My lady was jumping up and down like a small kid and gave me a hug when we got back on the boat. "I'm very old, if I didn't see it today I might not have seen it at all in my life", she said. The husband said thank you to me with a big smile on his face. The three of us were very happy. Too bad the other groups did not see it. This is one of the most impressive diving experiences I have had.
Visit Richelieu rock and Koh Tachi pinnacle by daytrip boat and live-aboard boat with Khao Lak Scuba Adventures  from 15 Oct - 16 May

Mantaqueen III is in the water today.

Hi everyone
It's one of the best days of the week. The sun is shining. And finally our big boat Mantaqueen III gets to be in the water.
We started to build Mantaqueen III in May 2010. It's a steel boat, 36m long and 7.5m wide. Everyone is working very hard on the boat and we managed to finish the hull of the boat. The boat is now in the water since 14:30pm today. They started the launch at 09:00am with many workers and 4 cranes. There were more than 100 people watching by the time they pushed the boat into the water. It was a very exciting show for all the kids and the villagers around there. We all had champagne and some food together after the big job was done.
Check out the photo galleries, here and here.

New staff for the next high season.

Hello
My name is Natthaphon Chotmaneepithak. But people call me Bee since I was born.
I've been in the diving business since 1997, I started out as an office girl. After a few months of hearing people who came back from the diving trips telling stories about their great day of diving, I started to read the dive manual and do diving course. After the OWD course, I discovered that this is what I had been looking for in the last many years. I was so obsessed about diving so I became a dive professional in 2000. And now I'm a PADI MSDT.
After many years of diving and teaching diving I wanted to do something different that would still involve diving. That's why I started working for KSA since the 1st of September in the office.
Feel free to contact me to get all the informations about diving, Khao Lak, accommodations, weather or whatever that you need to make your holiday easy and fun.
